Windows Live Communication Platform has stopped working
I downloaded the latest Windows Live! Messanger (version 9). Unfortunately I cannot get it working and it seems many other users have the same issue- the error message Windows Live Communications Platform Has Stopped Working.
The details of this error seem to point to the F Secure Firewall I run ( the 2008 version in my case) However even disabling this failed to resolve issues (if only to debug- I strongly recommend you don’t disable security measures to enable messenger apps!)
I found various purported solutions to the problem but none worked for me.
Remove any custom themes from Vista (ie. Windowblinds) – I don’t use this so not applicable to me.
Delete the contacts directory in the Windows live folder (you can find this in Vista by going to your user profile folder (usually C:\Users\<your login name> and then ensuring you have set “show hidden folders” go to App Data\Local\Microsoft\
In here you will find a Windows Live Contacts directory- you can either delete it (or like me if your less trusting of such advice- rename it to something like Windows Live Contacts.bak) and then try your messenger again.
This has apparently worked for many users- but alas not for me. In case you are worried the program recreates the directory if it cannot find it- like so many microsoft programs.
So you can then persevere with trying to find your own solutions- if you get it sorted be free to comment on it here, but in my case I chose to uninstall it and try to get back to an older version. These are a bit more tricky to find as any normal searches for them turn up the latest problematic one.
I found the last version ( I think its the last version 8.5.1302.1018) – it looks Ok to me – here ( be warned there are a lot of Shareware apps using the messenger name that appear when you search in Google) . While they may be harmless I have a degree of concern that other apps use similar names to confuse users and may ultimately end up with you either a paid for program you did not want or possible spyware or malware you did not ask for.

I had the same problem and eventually discovered it was the NVidia Forceware Network Access Manager getting in the way. Once I removed it I was fine.
Seems reasonable- and another possible solution for some folks. So thanks for that. In my case I am not running this so not guilty. I guess it could be relating to some other low level network app, but without going through all my services and stopping them all methodically I am not sure.
Its not important enough an app for me to put that kind of effort in so have rolled back so I am at least running again. Good work spotting that one though. Thanks

this thing is stupid iv even tryed using an older msn i till got it so i f any one knos how to fix this please email me on haydn_cameron@hotmail.com
Are you sure you’re issue is created by Windows Live Messenger. I could prove mine by toggling between versions. I have to add recently I upgraded to v2009(Build 14.0.8046.206) and its been fine. You might like to try this?
I have tried everything mentioned to fix this problem and none of them work If therer is no fix to the problem then let’s not guess what it is. I will be going to Windows Live and get a solution even if I have to call them on the phone. It is a sad thing that a program that once ran without any problems is now having problems what did Windows Live do to screw things up?

I had that problem too and tried everything but nothing worked untill I found this thread… The NVidiaFNAM was indeed the problem… THANX Terry A.!!!!
i have recently had the same problem. but by removing the contacts folder as told, the problem was solved. the first couple of times i tried this it did not work and said the file was in use, but after much persistance i got rid of it
hey ive tried the solution in deleting c:\users\\AppData\Windows Live Contacts ..
i actually renamed the folder with .bak
msn is ok for now.. this is version 2011 Build 15.4.3502.922 . and this is solution for the Windows Live Communications Platform has stopped working error message and crash where it says to debug or close..
