Dreamweaver 8 and Vista Compatibility : Help and Support disabled

If you install Dreamweaver 8 onto a Vista pc and accept the default file associations, due to the way Vista handles XML you will find the Vista help system becomes inoperable . An error that it cannot reach / and unable to download will come up. Adobe have supplied a patch and for convenience I have attached it here. Its a small registry fix and correct the xml file association.

Logitech Set Point problems

Since the latest version of Logitech setpoint came out for the G5 Laser Mouse, I have been beset with problems in games (BF2142 primarily).

Basically the latest update (3.3) broke my installation which had worked fine for a while. All the extra buttons worked in BF2142. With the new setpoint in, it all went tits up.

No matter what changes I made int he software it would not let me use the clickable right and left scroll postions. I tried installing and re installing etx etc but to no avail.

I decided to roll back to an older version 3.0.107 as this had been OK.

Unfortunately this was not a smooth roll back either. (PS don’t ask why I did not use System Restore- any time I try to use this I get an error saying that the system cannot be rolled back) Not sure whats causing this, just as well I keep full system back ups anyway.

With the older 3.0.107 installed none of my assigned buttons worked here either.

Ferreting around in Setpoint though if you go to the advanced view you can tell it to recognize some games. Reading the help guide I think its supposed to recognize game sby itself, but mines didn’t. I registered BF2142 in here then went back to the main screen, added BF2142 in Manage Programs and assigned keys.

Hurrah this worked however there is a caveat.

Set point seems to have some weird behaviour when you use the cancel button. I have three custom key assignments for BF2142 functions. If I open the Manage programs screen with BF2142 selected all my assignments are there. If I click Cancel – as you do when you check settings but change nothing, all the keystrokes are set to blank and so don’t work in game. It seems to be important to click OK even when you have done nothing.

Update: I have been advised by Logitech tech support to keep using the older driver until a later version fixes the issue. Also be advised there is a later firmware version available now. DO NOT aply this through Vista or you will suffer a blue sceen.

What is xcmon32.exe

A colleague found this on his laptop the other day and was obviously having an issue with it- think it was reporting in Task manager that it had several tens of million’s of Page faults. You may need to expand your columns view in Task manager to see this.

I was asked first do I know any websites that list running processes on your PC, and second- any idea what xcmon32 is?

Well the first question is an easy one, the best site I have found in processlibrary.com, it lists all the most well known processes on a pc and tells you whether you can stop them, remove them whatever. Very useful for gamers as you want to get rid of any unrequired apps before playing online.

They have a rather useful extension to the Task Manager too, that allows you to directly link from Task manager to their website for any gven process and see what it does.

However unusually it did not list xcmon32.

A quick search on Google only found a couple of hits and those led to threads on some techy Bulletin Boards which discussed the xcmon32 process as a virus or possible spyware/trojan. I have to say I thought this unlikely so did a bit more digging on a similar PC to my colleague. The answer was pretty well ther ein an ini file on the system- xcmon32.ini. It showed a network path that was being used to collect logs- by the look’s of things, audit logs. And indeed this is what it is, a system audit tool deployed by an admin in the network, to monitor the executables running on your PC and report back- so Big Brother is watching.

The executable reports the following: activeITassets activeSAM Agent . Its made by someone called Monactive Software who now seem to  belong to this website: Centenial Software.

It’s also noteable that it does not run as the user or system profile but one created by the application by the looks of things for the purpose of the audit. Its also possible to stop the process though I suspect its a futile gesture as I think it probably reports back at boot up time so by the time you get to it, its all ready reported back to the mother ship.
